Origin and Objectives
Plymouth Architectural Trust came into existence 35 years ago, replacing the Plymouth Branch of the former Devon & Cornwall Society of Architects. Cornwall Architectural Trust and Exeter Society of Architects were formed at the same time. Each has similar objectives:
The three Trusts undertook to continue, on a joint basis, the Devon & Cornwall Travelling Scholarship, awarded to a student at the Plymouth School of Architecture.
The Trust seeks to promote a debate about the quality of our surroundings - existing and proposed - and provide a series of events that includes lectures, debates and visits to interesting buildings and other projects. Many of these are arranged in conjunction with the Plymouth Branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The Trust has a small collection of historic books on architecture; this is housed in the library of the University of Plymouth.
Following an amendment to the Governing Document of the Trust in 1992, membership of the Trust is no longer confined to members of the architectural profession. All of those with an interest in architecture and the built environment are most welcome as members. There is a nominal membership fee of £5.00 per person each year, the session running from 1 October to 30 September.
