Heritage Open Days is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and provides a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy completely free of charge. Our activities this year are also linked to Plymouth Arts Centre Ambulation project which brings together specially commissioned and works by artists who use journeying and walking as an artistic practice.
This is a wonderful opportunity to come and look at the largest and best attended regional producing theatre in the UK. Planned in partnership, the Theatre Royal Plymouth is also a featured building in the Heritage Lottery Funded Plymouth: 20th Century City project – www.20thcenturycity.org.uk. There will be a free ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Theatre Royal and Drum Theatre to give you a unique look at this busy and distinctive building in Plymouth. As well as a Q&A with Adrian Vinken, Chief Executive of the Theatre Royal Plymouth.
Later in the day there will the opportunity to come and look around a truly unique building, TR2. TR2 is the Theatre Royals production and education centre. It sits on the banks of the River Plym in Plymouth and has been constructed on reclaimed land. There will be a free led tour to see the backstage work of the Theatre Royal and this architecturally award-winning building which contains the Theatres set, costume, prop-making and rehearsal facilities
Visitors booked on both tours are encouraged to walk along the South West Coastal Path - www.southwestcoastpath.com or cycle to TR2 for the afternoon tour.
Plymouth city centre is the greatest built example of post-War British planning and architecture. Jeremy Gould, the leading expert on Post-War architecture in Plymouth will be leading a special walking tour around Plymouth City Centre. Discover why Plymouth has the greatest number of listed post-war buildings outside London and why it represented the architecture of the future – clean, bright, democratic and, most of all, optimistic.
Pre-booking is essential for all these events, visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk or email info@acdandc.org.uk to book a place.
