Living the City

The Living the City conference focused on the ‘post-regenerated' city, concentrating on the themes of conservation, culture, transport, habitation and energy.  The speakers are significant makers and shapers of the modern city. 

The conference was targetted at architects, planners, urban designers, design champions and councillors and national, regional and local policy makers who are concerned with the quality of life in the modern town or city. 

Living the City was sponsored by the University of Plymouth, the Royal Institute of British Architects Plymouth branch, Plymouth City Council, Architecture Centre for Devon & Cornwall, the Plymouth Architectural Trust, First Great Western and supported by CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment).

CHAIRMAN

Professor Jeremy Gould

Jeremy Gould is Professor of Architecture at the University of Plymouth.  He is a practising architect and partner of Jeremy & Caroline Gould Architects.  He has lectured widely on the architectural history of the twentieth century, is author of Modern Houses in Britain, numerous articles on modern architecture and planning and reports on the 1950s buildings of Exeter, Bristol, Coventry and Plymouth.  He is a member of The Twentieth Century Society, Regional Representative for CABE and chairman of the Plymouth Architectural Trust.  He has presented television films on architectural and planning issues for BBC SW and Carlton/ITV, one of which won a Royal Television Society Award.

Ben Hamilton-Baillie

 

Architect and urban designer and expert in street design and transport

Ben Hamilton-Baillie qualified as an architect, and worked in the fields of housing, transport and planning before setting up Hamilton-Baillee Associates in 2003. He has had a lifelong interest in improving the quality of streets and public spaces, and finding new ways to promote safety, economic vitality and civility. He is one of the advisory experts on "Shared Space" for five European countries developing a range of practical projects to explore innovative street design. He is also consultant to English Heritage and an enabler for CABE Space.  Hamilton-Baillie Associates Ltd provides practical advice and policy development work to combine urban design, traffic engineering and safety improvements. Clients include highway authorities, government agencies, developers, community groups and design teams in architecture, urban and landscape design, planning, regeneration, transport and traffic engineering.

Didier Repellin

Inspector General of Historic Buildings and Chief Inspector of Historic Monuments, Lyon, France

Award-winning French architect Didier Repellin is responsible for the major historic buildings of southern France and for the French Government-owned buildings in Rome.  Didier Repellin has saved and transformed such iconic buildings as the Villa Medici in Rome, the Antique Theatre in Orange and the Palace of the Popes in Vaucluse, as well as modern buildings like Le Corbusier's Convent of La Tourette.  He has also been involved as a consultant in important United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) projects such as The Great Wall of China, Damas in Syria and Penang and Malacca in Malaysia. He was responsible for leading the bid to make the city of Lyon a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ton Schaap

Senior Urban Planner, City of Amsterdam

Ton Schaap trained as an urban designer, and has been Senior Urban Planner for the City of Amsterdam's city planning department since 1983. Whilst there he has been responsible for numerous urban renewal, public space, housing and mixed use schemes across Amsterdam. Ton also teaches at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, and lectures widely both in the Netherlands and in Germany, Italy, Austria, Canada and the USA.

Architect and director of Gareth Hoskins Architects Ltd. of Glasgow

Gareth Hoskins Architects was set up in January 1998 following Gareth's return to Glasgow after working in London for six years. The practice grew quickly and following five successful years incorporated as Gareth Hoskins Architects Ltd, employing 24 people at the time. Now an experienced and talented team of 35 people led by a board of 5 Directors the practice has gone from strength to strength through a series of high profile competition wins, awards success and major public and private commissions.

Michael Pawlyn

Founder and Director of Exploration Architecture

Michael Pawlyn set up Exploration in 2007 to focus on environmentally sustainable architecture inspired by nature. From 1997 to 2007 he worked with Grimshaw Architects and was instrumental in the design development of the Eden Project. He has lectured widely on the subject of sustainable design and in summer 2009 taught on an intensive course in Biomimicry at Schumacher College. He is currently working on ‘The Sahara Forest Project' and other schemes that explore new approaches to environmental challenges.
