Sure Start children’s centres: a post-occupancy evaluation
The government is funding 3,500 new Sure Start children’s centres by 2010 in support of its ambitious plans to give pre-school children the best possible start. This post-occupancy evaluation by CABE for the Department of Children, Schools and Families presents the views of parents, staff and design professionals on the new facilities. It will be of interest to architects, centre heads, local authorities and the government and includes lessons applicable to future capital building programmes, including other education buildings such as primary schools.

In this issue, we report on Britain’s first-ever ‘green day’ – a CABE initiative to encourage learning about buildings, spaces and climate change. We highlight some of the work being done around the country in the run-up to the key stage 3 curriculum implementation, feature a school in London that specialises in design and the built environment and report how teachers and educators can get involved in the debate about emerging technologies.

Green day: A climate change activity kit for schools
Green day is a one-day event for schools about climate change, sustainability and the built environment. It is a fun and flexible way to integrate these themes into lessons and schoolwide activities and aims to make schools more sustainable in the long term. It is promoted by CABE, as part of its education work. This activity kit provides ideas, activities and resources for holding a green day in your school, making it a more sustainable place in which to work, play and learn.

Building Schools for the Future: The role of a design champion
Building Schools for the Future will see every secondary school in England rebuilt or refurbished. It is important to have leaders at local level to help the initiative succeed. CABE believes that ‘design champions’ can fulfil that role. This guide outlines who is best placed to perform the role of the design champion, what their contribution should be, and at what stages of the project.
CABE publication from 28 November 2007
In this issue we report on CABE’s ongoing education partnerships, including My Space, a programme of workshops that has culminated in an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. We are delighted to profile a project delivered in partnership with the V&A and RIBA Partnership to celebrate the re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall on London’s south bank.

CABE publication from 01 June 2007
In this issue we report on the government's 'learning outside the classroom' manifesto. CABE sees out-of-school-hours learning as way in which young people can learn about their built environment. We report on a CABE-funded project in which young people worked with an architect to interpret the 'New Hearts for Bow' building in east London. We also explore built environment education in the USA. Much of the work taking place at centres such as the Chicago Architecture Foundation and the National Building Museum is seen to lead the way in both pedagogy and practice. We take a look at built environment learning in the fields of science and maths and announce the launch of a new international educator's network that CABE is pleased to be a part of.
