Greening your Victorian house
Some notes from our seminar in November 2008
Victorian and Edwardian houses are our future. They are very popular with owners, and most of them are still likely to be around in fifty years' time. Yet there is little doubt that climate change is upon us, and we need to do what we can to mitigate its effects.
What reasonable changes can we make to our houses to increase their energy efficiency, without spoiling what is special about them? more...
0901.1 Lecture: AWN Pugin: Contrasts and After
Monday 12 January 6.30pm to 8pm
First in our Architecture and the Pen lecture series. Pugin’s Contrasts of 1836 was the first architectural manifesto. With True Principles, published in 1841, it inspired a generation and transformed the Gothic Revival. His later writings were less well received and less widely read. The Victorian Society was founded over 50 years ago, in 1958. It was a response to a growing threat to fine examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. As the initial manifesto stated, 'The Victorian Society has been formed to make sure that the best Victorian buildings and their contents do not disappear before their merits are more generally appreciated... Our role in saving Victorian and Edwardian buildings
Victorian and Edwardian buildings are irreplaceable, cherished, diverse, beautiful, familiar and part of our everyday life. They contribute overwhelmingly to the character of places people love and places where people live. They belong to all of us. Their owners are really only custodians for future generations. Victorian and Edwardian buildings are part of our collective memory, and central to how we see ourselves as individuals, communities and as a nation.
When decisions are taken which affect their future, the debate must be open and informed. We need to understand what is special about Victorian and Edwardian buildings and landscapes so that any necessary changes can be incorporated without damaging them forever. We don't want to lose our past through ignorance. more...
