Planning Aid provides free, independent and professional help, advice and support on planning issues to people and communities who cannot afford to hire a planning consultant. Planning Aid complements the work of local authorities but is wholly independent of them. In most UK regions Planning Aid is run by the Royal Town Planning Institute (registered charity no. 262865).

You can search the English Heritage database for listed buildings. Register with the website to find out free of charge.
Always check your proposals with the local authority planning department, altering or demolishing a listed building without consent is a criminal offence. Your conservation officer will also be able to tell you if the property is within a conservation area this may affect alterations to your property or a new development.
